In 1971 a group of 36 growers located in the wine growing regions between San Guiseppi and Corleone Sicily, had a common interest. That was to create an old world wine with modern day technology: a wine with all the flavors of Sicily and all the warmth of its sun and its people. Today, that philosophy has not changed, only now we are 817 growers strong. The lush valleys in which we grow our grapes have a millennial history of producing the finest wines. The once great Caesar commissioned that he would only drink Catarratto wine from this region in Sicily because of the exotic and floral flavor of these delicate varietals.
The company name, Conca Doro, LLC, is a derivative of the region in which we produce our wine. The translation is "Golden Fountain," in reference to the richness of the land in which we grow and the sun reflecting from the natural springs that provide the region's water. The wine we produce will never lose its old world traditions. All our "Spina" wines are made from 100% of their specific varietals. The grapes are all hand picked and sorted to ensure the best possible quality and the highest sugar content. It is not uncommon for us to pick from the same vines three or four times in a month in order to ensure that what is picked is ripe (this is not true with machine picking). It is not surprising to find residual sugar in a wine that has been given such great care. Each one of the varietals has a unique process so as not to compromise the integrity of the grape.
Great care started when we first planted some 40 years ago. Each zone was picked specifically for particular varietals in order to encompass the soil and sun conditions and to infuse the flavors of the surrounding region. A perfect example of this is the exotic taste of melon that is present in the Catarratto, canary and honeydew melons surround all of the Catarratto grapes (the Merlot and Syrah are surrounded by berries and pears). The soil in which the grapes are grown is a blend of volcanic and clay and appears a dark copper color. This method is by far not the easiest road to travel. But, as we have stated, we will never compromise integrity of old world traditions. We strive to infuse our wines with the passion of Sicily.
